HP Procurve -Network Security
Protecting organisations’ data through rigorous network security continues
to be a vital requirement for both IT and business management. ProCurve
Networking offers protection to enterprise networks employing industry-recognised
protocols to encrypt user traffic and bring security management to the
edge of the network, enforcing authentication and access rights, as well
as providing security configuration and policy management.
ProCurve’s virus throttling technology reacts to the behavior of malicious code rather than recognising signatures contained in the code itself to guard enterprise networks against harm. Signatures are only recognised once an attack has taken place somewhere on the internet, virus throttling on the other hand reacts to certain suspicious behaviour by allowing system managers to set automatic responses when such behaviour is detected.
For example, the attempted creation of a large number of outgoing connections per second – a common feature of denial-of-service attacks, is prohibited. Also, instead of stopping viruses from entering a system, it restricts the code from leaving and because connections above the allowed rate can be blocked for configurable periods of time, the system is tolerant to false positives and therefore robust.
In this way virus throttling technology buys time when a system is attacked
by a new or previously undetected virus and prevents damage from occurring
until the system’s standard virus protection signatures are updated to
counter the new threat.
